Eugenia Serif: A Dominant Typeface Rooted in History
Eugenia is a medium-contrast serif typeface, which honors the historic district of Nyboder, Copenhagen. Eugenia consists of prominent serifs, ball terminals and tall glyphs. This typeface represents the elegance and feminity of Nyboder, as well as its dominant and niche personality.

Paying Homage to
Nyboder, Copenhagen
Eugenia was inspired by the hand-painted signage found in the historic district of Nyboder, Copenhagen. Nyboder consists of long vibrantly-colored barracks that are each labeled by unique names. Written in Danish, each name is a direct translation of a specific animal
(e.g., Krokodilegade translates to Crocodile Street) which contributes to Nyboder’s quirky personality. When designing Eugenia, not only did we want to preserve the colors seen in Nyboder, but we equally aimed to honor the way in which the typeface was originally used: within signage.

Crafting from Scratch
& Preserving Culture
Our team began by referencing the hand-painted signage and re-drawing each individual letter on vellum. Once we defined the distinct qualities of the existing type, such as the serifs and ball terminals, we refined and standardized said qualities in order to be consistent across a lowercase and uppercase alphabet. After rounds of hand-sketching, our team moved onto digitize our alphabets into Glyphs Mini. Throughout the process, our team made it a point to preserve the personality of the existing type and infuse the essence of Nyboder.
